Things To Look Forward To

As you could probably gather from my last post, I've been a little pessimistic lately. I figured it would be important to counterbalance that post with something more positive, so here are a few things I am looking forward to.

My 21st birthday! I'm not doing anything special, but there's something satisfying about having a day all to yourself. I'm going for pizza with my mom and brother, and I'll probably bake those confetti cupcakes. Oh and knowing myself I will most likely make a sneaky NailPolishCanada purchase.... :)

Confetti cupcakes, OPI Don't Bossa Nova Me Around, Zoya Payton, Pizza

Going to Disney World! I'm sure some people think I'm lame for loving Disney World so much, but for creative-escapist-types like myself, there really is no better place on Earth. The atmosphere is fun and enjoyable, the immersive rides are the coolest, and they have delicious restaurants. Frankly, I can't think of a reason not to go!

Some shots I took on my last trip to Disney

SUMMER! Before we know it, summer will be upon us. I know this winter is taking forever to end, but at least it's February and not December. It's not like I have any extravagant plans, but the warm weather will be a much needed change, and hopefully I will be in good spirits by then.

DIY Summer Coconut Coffee Scrub

Hey everyone! Just as I ran out of my favourite scrub from Lush, Michelle from Skana spa in New York contacted me and asked if I was interested in sharing a DIY scrub recipe on my blog, so naturally I agreed and the results were great! I have since learnt that Skana Spa has been reaching out to bloggers everywhere in order to share their awesome scrub recipes - a quick Google search will help you find the scrub you might be looking for in case this one doesn't suit your needs.

The scrub I will be sharing is ideally used in the summer because it contains all-natural ingredients that soothe and moisturize the skin after being out in the sun. Although fall is just around the corner, I figured some of my readers might be returning home from their last-minute vacations and could still benefit! Here is an explanation that Michelle sent me...

"The summer is a great time to become more active and participate in outdoor fun.

However, the skin requires extra care when the days become longer and sunnier

and the outdoor temperature rises. Warm weather can leave skin dehydrated more

easily, and increased sun exposure may call for a regular treatments that nourish

and exfoliate the skin. The experts from Skana spa of the New York resort Turning

Stone have provided us with a recipe for an all-natural scrub that will lift away dead,

rough skin while revealing smoother skin that has a healthier glow."

I tried the scrub out for the first time yesterday and, let me tell you, it actually works. The coffee grinds are the perfect exfoliant - not too abrasive, just right. The coconut oil is incredibly moisturizing, and the aloe has a great cooling effect on the skin.

Ingredients:

- 1/4 cup coffee grinds from coffee maker
- 1/2 cup coconut oil (I picked up mine at Tau, a health food store near my house - you may have difficulty finding it at your regular grocery store)
- 1/2 cup aloe vera gel (easily found at your nearest drug store & great product to have around the house during the summer)

Unfortunately this isn't the most appealing scrub, LOL, but the results are effective - trust me.

Directions:

1) Strain the coffee grinds fairly well. Note: Completely drying the grains is not necessary.
2) Melt the coconut oil, and pour it over the coffee grinds. Stir the mixture with a spoon.
3) Add in aloe vera gel, and leave the mixture aside to set. The mixture can be refrigerated or simply left at room temperature to set.

* My observation: If your home is unairconditioned like mine at the moment, putting it in the refrigerator is your best choice, otherwise the coconut oil will not properly combine with the rest of the ingredients. Note that the coconut oil will harden once refrigerated for too long, so remove it from the fridge about 10 minutes before you intend on using it.

Other important indications/tips:

- Use the scrub in the shower to scrub the entire body, paying close attention to rough skin on the elbows and feet.
- Also apply to areas that are prone to developing cellulite and may need a little firming action such as the belly, thighs and bum. The coffee has properties that reduce cellulite and inflammation!
- Rinse with cool water.
- Using the scrub on your face is not recommended because it might be too rough.
- Using the scrub about once a week is more than enough.

And that's about it! I used the scrub in the shower before bed and noticed a difference immediately. Then, once I woke up, the coconut oil had completely soaked into my skin leaving everything super smooth :) All in all, I would definitely remake this scrub whenever I feel like my skin needs some extra exfoliation!

What I'm Watching: Summer Edition

I'm on summer break and I don't currently have a full-time job, which means I'm basically always watching TV or reading a book or watching movies to pass the time. Also, I'm curious about what TV shows everyone's watching so I thought I'd discuss some of the summer shows I'm loving, and you guys can let me know what you're watching in the comments & if we watch the same stuff, I'd love to chat about it :)

I figured I'd get the show I'm least excited about out the way first: Pretty Little Liars. Ugh, this shoooow. I'm going to be honest... I'm not into it anymore, but it's on its fourth season and I feel like I'm in too deep to back away now. I hate-watch it now (kinda like how you hate-read Twilight or Fifty Shades of Grey). It frustrates me to no end, but somehow, I'm stuck on it. I have major issues with this show, not because of the mediocre acting, but because of the writers. Mysteries from seasons past are left unsolved, and I feel like they constantly bring up new elements instead of tying loose ends. Overall, really unsatisfying. Would not recommend. If you watch it too, please tell me you feel the same way?! I think I have hopes that they'll somehow revive it and make it worthwhile... Sigh.

Canadians, you can catch up on episodes at MuchMusic.com.

Big Brother: I'm not by any means a BB superfan like most of this show's viewers, but I've definitely enjoyed watching the past couple seasons. My only problem with it is that it's difficult to keep up with because it airs Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday. Other than that, it's really interesting to watch! I love seeing who befriends who, who wins what competition, which alliances are strong and which ones die... It's a lot of fun. Admittedly, most of the contestants are shallow and unidimensional, but Big Brother makes for the best "guilty pleasure TV show". I'm not absolutely loving anyone right from the start this season, but my favorites so far are Amanda and Nick.

Canadians, you can catch up on episodes at GlobalTV.ca.

Skins (!!!!!!!!) I recently re-watched seasons 1 through 4 of Skins on Netflix so I'm really excited about the 7th season. If you are unaware, this will be the last season of the show and will only be 6 episodes long, highlighting the lives of Effy Stonem, Cassie Ainsworth, and James Cook (all past characters). So far, only the first episode has aired and personally I think it's still too early to decide whether or not this is a good idea. I'm already sad about what they did to Naomi's character, but we'll have to see how everything pans out in the next episode. I'm excited for it!

Torrent this to catch up!

My Netflix summer pick is Psych, a hilarious and smart detective show. I happened to catch an episode of this on TV one day, never having heard of it before, and to my delight the first six seasons happened to be on Netflix! I'm not that big on violence and suspense which my only issue with detective shows like CSI, but Psych has that super satisfying crime-solving element mixed in with a humorous main character - keeping it light but still mysterious at all times. Plus, I'm a sucker for classic Holmesian problem-solving. Overall, really entertaining and sustains the waits between my other TV shows lol!

You'll need American Netflix to watch this. Just do a quick search on how to get it if you're Canadian.

There you have it! If you have any other recommendations for me (preferably on Netflix) please let me know :)

Nail Polish of the Day: August 30

Hey everyone! So here's today's nail polish of the day. I included this polish in my "Most Worn" summer items tag and I figured I should probably use it in a NOTD. It's L'Oreal's L'Orange and I think it's the perfect sumer-fall transition color. It's a bright orange but it's not neon, so I definitely foresee wearing this polish in the autumn time around Halloween as well.

What I love about this polish is the consistency. It's not streaky whatsoever, in fact the finish reminds me of gel nails. The top coat I added seemed almost superfluous because the polish itself is so shiny and smooth. The only thing is that this was a three-coater. One coat definitely wasn't enough, and two coats didn't seem "finished". I don't mind, though. It's such a pretty color anyway.

Have you guys tried L'Oreal polishes? I'd be interested in buying a few more for fall, considering I loved this one, and Amarixe raves about them over on her blog. They're inexpensive compared to higher-end nail polish, and I really love the quality!

Monday Questionnaire (via Amarixe)

1.) Mood:
A little cranky. I was sleeping really well (which hasn't been happening often) until I woke up completely unable to breathe from my nose because of dumb allergies! Gonna have to take a nap later, methinks.

2.) What is your favorite article of clothing to shop for?
I prefer shopping for tops as opposed to bottoms because I get easily discouraged if pants don't fit.

3.) Three hours ago, I was ____________.
Wide awake, unable to breathe :(

4.) Current nail polish:
Purple/silver glitter Kiko polish (see my NOTD)

5.) When is the last time you read an actual paper newspaper (not digital)?
Wow, I can't remember. I don't actively read the news, I just follow up on the tidbits I see on social media and am intrigued about.

6.) Current outfit:
Pajamas! I want to sleeep.

7.) What is your natural hair texture?
Really curly, large and frizzy

8.) Would you rather go a week without your phone or a week without your computer?
I would rather go a week without my phone. I really hate using my phone, to be honest. I don't like calling people and texting becomes a chore, especially when people get mad that I don't text back right away (really?).

9.) What is your favorite musical?
I recently saw Wicked and thought it was amazing (!!!), but I think I'll have to go with either Grease or Mamma Mia!

10.) Weekly goals:
Get in the mood for school considering it starts in a little less than 2 weeks! (Where did the summer go?!)

Didn't want this post to be picture-less, but here's one of my favorite pairs of pants to wear in the summer! (Disregard my unmade bed :P)
